Riccardo Massi

Italian tenor Riccardo Massi is rapidly earning international recognition as an exciting spinto tenor, and has been heard in theaters including the Metropolitan Opera, Royal Opera, Covent Garden, Teatro dell’Opera di Roma, Bavarian State Opera, Munich, Teatro Regio in Turin, Teatro Giuseppe Verdi in Trieste, Berlin State Opera, Deutsche Oper Berlin, Royal Swedish Opera in Stockholm, Oslo Opera, and at the Australian .

Riccardo Massi began his 2014/2015 season with his debut at the Norwegian Opera in Oslo as Pinkerton in Madama Butterfly. He will make his debut with the Opera de Marseille as Enzo in La Gioconda, and then returns to the Australian Opera this season as Cavaradossi in Tosca. Later on in the season Massi will debut at the Grand theatre de Geneve in performances of the Verdi Requiem, at the Theatre Royale de la Monnaie as Riccardo in Un Ballo in Maschera and makes his debut at the Bregenz Festival as Calaf in Turandot.

Riccardo Massi developed his vocal technique in Rome with David Holst, who has who has been his sole mentor .. Massi was invited to join the Accademia della Scala, after which he made  his operatic debut in December of 2009 as Radames in Aida in Salerno under Daniel Oren.  He subsequently sang his first Cavaradossi in Tosca with the Landestheater Salzburg and then added Pollione in Norma to his repertoire in Lima, Peru. In the summer of 2010 he made his Glyndebourne Festival debut as Malcolm in Macbeth. Massi made his German operatic debut in October 2010 as Cavaradossi at the Staatsoper Berlin. He subsequently debuted at the Teatro Giuseppe Verdi in Trieste as Jacopo Foscari in Verdi’s I Due Foscari and at the Teatro dell‘Opera di Roma in Rome as Arrigo in La Battaglia di Legnano. He also debuted at the Verbier Festival in a concert performance of Tosca conducted by Giannadrea Noseda. Massi made his North American debut in Tosca with the Palm Beach Opera in the spring of 2011 and in the summer of the same year he performed at  the same work at the Verbier Festival in Switzerland in concert under Gianandrea Noseda.

In the autumn of 2011, Riccardo Massi made his South American debut in Tosca in Rio de Janeiro. He then made his debut in Amsterdam as Enzo Grimaldo in a concert performance of La Gioconda at the Concertgebeouw opposite Eva Maria Westbroek and conducted by Maestro Bruno Bartoletti.  This was followed by his Bayerische Staatsoper debut as Cavaradossi in Tosca in November of 2011. He then returned to the Berlin State Opera as Cavaradossi and sang the role for his French stage debut at the Opera D’Avignon, and for his debut at the Teatro Regio in Turin. In the summer of 2012, he returned to the Teatro dell’Opera in Rome as Radames in Aida.

In the fall of 2012 Riccardo Massi, sang his first Manrico in Il Trovatore for the Canadian Opera Company in Toronto. He added Riccardo in Un Ballo in Maschera to his repertoire at the Basel Opera. In February 2013, Massi sang his first Calaf in Turandot in a new production at the Royal Swedish Opera in Stockholm which featured Nina Stemme’s debut in the title role. Massi subsequently made his debut at Michigan Opera Theater in Aida and at the Australian Opera in Sydney as Don Alvaro in La Forza del Destino.  The artist began the 2013/2014 season with his Houston Opera debut as Radames. He subsequently sang his first Andrea Chenier in Stockholm. In June of 2014 Massi made his debut at the Royal Opera, Covent Garden as Cavaradossi in Tosca.

Other roles in his developing repertoire include, the title roles in Ernani and Don Carlos, Gabriele Adorno in Simone Boccanegra, Arrigo in I Vespri Siciliani,  and Maurizio in Adriana Lecouvreur.
