Pretty Yende

South African soprano Pretty Yende first came to international attention in 2010 when she became the first artist in the history of the Belvedere Competition to win First Prize in every category. She also won First Prize in Placido Domingo’s Operalia Competition in 2011. Yende made her professional operatic debut at the Latvian National Theatre in Riga as Micaela in Carmen and has since been seen at nearly all of the major theaters of the world, including the Metropolitan Opera, Teatro alla Scala, Covent Garden, Deutsche Oper Berlin, and many others.

Yende’s engagements for the 2015/16 season include the title role in Lucia di Lammermoor at Deutsche Oper Berlin, Adina in L’elisir d’Amore at Staatsoper Berlin, Pamina in Die Zauberflöte at Grand Theatre de Geneve, Elvira in I Puritani at Opernhaus Zurich, her debut at the Paris Opera as Rosina in Il Barbiere di Siviglia, and concerts in Johannesburg, Cape Town, Vienna and Pesaro. Future engagements include Lucia di Lammermoor at Opera National de Paris, L’elisir d’Amore at Bayerische Staatsoper and Covent Garden, Il Barbiere di Siviglia and Romeo et Juliette at the Metropolitan Opera, and concerts in Prague, Vienna, Paris and Sao Paulo.

During the 2014/2015 season, Yende sang Pamina in Die Zauberflöte at the Metropolitan Opera, Rosina in Il Barbiere di Siviglia in Oslo, the title role in Lucia di Lammermoor at Deutsche Oper Berlin, Norina in Don Pasquale for her debut at the Gran Teatre del Liceu in Barcelona, and her debut as Susanna in Le nozze di Figaro with L.A. Opera. She also appeared in concerts in Vienna, Munich, Amsterdam, and at Carnegie Hall. In the 2013/2014 season, Yende made her L.A. Opera debut as Micaela in Carmen, made her debut in Hamburg as Firorilla in Il Turco in Italia, and returned to Teatro alla Scala in Le Comte Ory.

In January of 2013, Pretty Yende made her sensationally acclaimed Metropolitan Opera debut, stepping in as the Countess Adele in Le Comte Ory on a few weeks’ notice, opposite Juan Diego Florez. Immediately afterwards, she made her Vienna debut at Theater an der Wien in the same opera. Yende’s 2012/2013 season also included the title role in Lucia di Lammermoor in concert at Cape Town Opera and Musetta in La Boheme at Teatro alla Scala. A 2011 graduate of the Young Artists Accademia of the Teatro alla Scala, Yende made her debut with the company in 2010 as Berenice in Rossini’s L’Occasione fa il Ladro.
